Family bonds are the most important source of strength and security for children. But all relationships can become strained. The systemic therapist can help by meeting with families to talk about how they can respond to challenging situations. This is important because families often feel wary of talking about topics that are difficult for them. The systemic therapist can help families to approach difficult these topics safely. She will listen and learn about the unique strengths of each family member and help families to find the way forward that is best for them and healthy for their child’s development.
Systemic therapists work with many different types of combination of family members. A family therapy session will usually last about an hour and may be be weekly or less often and might address issues such as –
- Issues related to ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorders or other conditions
- Emotional or behavioural issues
- Issues related to school
- Life events: separation, divorce, illness, bereavement
- Sibling relationships, parental-child, step-parental relationships
- Couple relationships
- Identity issues related to past events, the future, cultural issues
